'Life is Easier on Land' - Yet, an Unwavering Spirit
Despite the allure of a 'normal' life on land, with its comforts and conveniences, this family chose a path less traveled. But here's where it gets controversial... they wouldn't trade their boat life for anything, even with all its challenges.
As house prices soared and living costs rose, the Rices decided to break free from the rat race. With a bold decision, they sold everything and set sail, creating a life of adventure for themselves and their kids.
"We wanted to live a life of dreams and love with our children. The ocean called to us, and we answered," shared Ms. Rice.
And this is the part most people miss... they didn't wait for retirement to live their best life. With a deep understanding of life's fragility, they chose to embrace each day, teaching their kids to do the same.
The journey began in 2016 with a 'budget sailing boat,' Catalpa, and led them through the waters of South East Asia. In 2022, they upgraded to Catalpa 2, a bigger boat purchased in San Diego.
But the road to adventure wasn't without its challenges. The toughest decision they faced was whether they were doing right by their kids. Pulling them out of school, away from family and friends, was a scary thought.
"In the beginning, I was nervous. It wasn't an easy journey, but we adapted, and traveling became our beautiful education," Ms. Rice reflected.
Life at sea tested them in ways they never imagined. From navigating through dangerous tides to hitting reefs, from holes in their boat to terrifying storms, and even being followed by a boat full of men in the middle of nowhere. But through it all, they found strength and resilience.
"The lows can be really hard, but the good times are incredible. You've got to want it," they caution.
If you're not a fan of the ocean's unpredictability or if you thrive on a strict schedule, boat life might not be for you. Flexibility and a relaxed attitude are key, they advise.
And for those who think it's all smooth sailing, think again. Challenges are part and parcel of this lifestyle, but the Rices believe in the value of a worldwide education of a different kind.
"It's about looking at the positive. Some of our favorite memories are from places we never thought we'd be. Life is easier on land, but we wouldn't have it any other way," they say.
After a decade, the Rices have no regrets. It's been worth every moment, and they'd do it all over again in a heartbeat.
