Imagine a world where the technology designed to break the sound barrier is now powering the AI revolution. Sounds like science fiction, right? But Boom Supersonic, the company striving to bring back supersonic passenger flight, is doing just that! They're adapting their cutting-edge jet engine technology to fuel the insatiable energy demands of AI data centers.

Boom Supersonic has been diligently working towards making their Overture supersonic airliner a reality. But developing aircraft that fly faster than sound is an incredibly expensive endeavor. Securing enough investment to keep the dream alive is a constant challenge. So, Boom developed a Plan B: leverage their existing technology to generate revenue in the short term.

And what industry is desperately craving more power? You guessed it: Artificial Intelligence. AI data centers are popping up everywhere, like an explosion of technological growth. But here's the catch: these centers are energy hogs, consuming massive amounts of electricity for both operation and cooling. Boom's solution? They're repurposing their Symphony jet engine to create a turbogenerator called "Superpower" that runs primarily on natural gas, with diesel fuel as a backup. Think of it as a high-tech generator on steroids.

Superpower shares a remarkable 80% of its components with the Symphony engine. But here's where it gets interesting... The key difference lies in what it doesn't have. Superpower ditches the turbofan used for propulsion in the aircraft and replaces it with additional compressor stages. Plus, it adds a free power turbine dedicated to generating electricity. This clever adaptation transforms a supersonic engine into a power plant.

And this is the part most people miss... Superpower is designed to operate without needing additional cooling systems, functioning efficiently in ambient temperatures up to a scorching 110°F (43°C). Each unit, no larger than a standard shipping container, can generate a substantial 42 MW of power. Boom claims that installation can be completed in just two weeks after the foundations are prepared. That’s incredibly fast deployment for such a significant power source.

Boom has already secured an order for 29 Superpower units from Crusoe, an AI infrastructure company, totaling a massive 1.21 GW of power. Their ambitious goal is to manufacture 4 GW of capacity annually by 2030.

With this new revenue stream, Boom hopes to solidify the financial foundation for their supersonic airliner project. As Boom Supersonic founder and CEO Blake Scholl put it, "Supersonic technology is an accelerant – of course for faster flight, but now for artificial intelligence as well. With this financing and our first order for Superpower, Boom is funded to deliver both our engine and our airliner."

But here's where it gets controversial... Some might argue that relying on natural gas, even as a primary fuel source, isn't the most environmentally friendly approach for powering AI data centers. While it may be more efficient than traditional power generation methods, is it truly a sustainable long-term solution?
