Egypt's Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty, emphasizes the critical role of Somalia in Egypt's national security and the broader African and Arab context. In a recent panel discussion at the Doha Forum, he highlighted the interconnected security and political challenges facing Somalia, urging a unified international response. Abdelatty stressed the importance of the African Union's Stabilization Mission (AUSSOM) in maintaining stability and expressed concern over funding shortfalls, calling on international partners to provide sustained and adequate financial support.
The minister outlined Egypt's long-standing policy, which prioritizes the unity and sovereignty of Somalia, opposing any unilateral measures that could disrupt the status quo. Egypt is also committed to strengthening Somalia's state institutions and enhancing its capabilities through scholarships and training programs. Abdelatty highlighted various training initiatives provided by the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development (EAPD), Al-Azhar, Egyptian universities, and the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding (CCCPA).
The panel discussion focused on coordinated strategies to preserve recent gains in Somalia, a nation in the Horn of Africa, and to address the intertwined security and political challenges that require a unified international approach. Abdelatty's remarks underscore the complex relationship between Egypt and Somalia, emphasizing the need for sustained international support to ensure stability and sovereignty in the region.
