Hugh Jackman’s Latest Wolverine Update Signals Good Things for MCU Enthusiasts
Hugh Jackman continues to keep the door open for a return as Wolverine, and his newest remarks offer a hopeful sign for fans of the MCU.
What does Jackman’s Wolverine update say?
The 2017 film Logan was meant to serve as Jackman’s farewell to the character, concluding nearly twenty years in the role. In conversations with Cynthia Erivo for Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors, Jackman acknowledged that stepping away from the superhero world after Logan was the plan.
“It truly felt like the end after Logan,” Jackman explained. “I needed to own it as the finale, because I fought for certain elements I wanted that movie to deliver, and I had to declare, ‘This is the last time I’m doing this.’”
Yet a pivotal moment came after he watched Ryan Reynolds inhabit the Merc with a Mouth in Deadpool.
“Then, when I saw Deadpool, I thought, ‘Oh. I understand 48 Hrs. I see Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte.’ But I’d push that aside,” Jackman noted. “I’ve told everyone I’m done. I’m not one of those guys. Then I thought, ‘You know what? I’m changing my mind. It’s not a big deal. I won’t even apologize.’ And it was amazing.”
When Erivo asked whether his Wolverine era had truly ended, Jackman replied that it doesn’t feel finished.
Right now, Jackman isn’t slated to appear in upcoming MCU installments. Wolverine survives the cliffhanger ending of Deadpool & Wolverine, leaving room for another return as Logan. With Marvel’s forthcoming schedule in mind, films like Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are expected to blend a mix of past and present MCU characters, and there are rumors that Jackman’s Wolverine could appear in one or both titles.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027.
