Kashari North Tensions Erupt as NRM Flag-Bearers Meeting Dismisses Bataringaya
A political clash unfolded in Kashari North when MP Basil Bataringaya, who is running as an independent after losing the NRM primaries, was told to leave an NRM flag-bearers meeting. The episode, which occurred at Munyonyi Primary School in Kashongi Sub-county, spotlights the rift within the party as the 2026 elections approach.
NRM district registrar Rodgers Mugisha stated clearly that Bataringaya had no business staying at the gathering because his independent candidacy places him outside the meeting’s scope, which is reserved for NRM flag bearers. “Honourable Bataringaya cannot be part of this meeting because he is standing as an independent. This meeting is strictly for NRM flag bearers,” Mugisha asserted, directing the MP to exit.
Bataringaya, who lost the NRM primaries to Patrick Musinguzi, subsequently secured an independent nomination. Yet he maintains he remains loyal to the NRM.
“I am still NRM at heart. This meeting is taking place in my constituency, and I have every right to attend,” Bataringaya responded after being asked to leave.
He also emphasized his ongoing support for the party’s presidential candidate, stating, “I am in the area rallying support for President Yoweri Museveni, and that should not disqualify me from participating in NRM activities.”
This incident highlights the continuing political strain in Kashari North as campaign season intensifies and parties navigate loyalties, nominations, and public expectations ahead of the next electoral contest.
