Guerschon Yabusele's Knicks Journey Ends with a Trade to the Bulls
Guerschon Yabusele's time with the New York Knicks has come to an end, marking the end of a disappointing tenure. The team traded him to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Dalen Terry, according to ESPN, ahead of the 3 p.m. trade deadline on Thursday.
This move was anticipated, as the Knicks had been actively seeking to trade Yabusele, who had struggled to find his place in the team's lineup. Yabusele signed a two-year contract worth approximately $12 million, with a player option for the following year, during the offseason. The Knicks were fortunate to avoid including draft compensation in the deal, as they didn't have to.
His arrival was highly anticipated, as he was the Knicks' most significant free-agent signing in two years, since Donte DiVincenzo. After several years playing overseas, Yabusele had revitalized his career with the French national team during the 2024 Olympics and with the Philadelphia 76ers the previous year. The Knicks envisioned him as a crucial contributor to their strengthened bench unit, providing much-needed depth at the big man position.
However, Yabusele's role in the team's system gradually diminished under coach Mike Brown's leadership. Interestingly, Yabusele signed with the Knicks before Brown was officially hired as the head coach. In 41 games with the Knicks, Yabusele averaged a modest 2.7 points, shooting 39.3 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from beyond the arc. He was notably absent from the team's last three games, as the Knicks were engaged in trade discussions.
Yabusele's comments earlier this week hinted at his realization of the situation. He expressed gratitude for his career opportunities, stating, 'I'm blessed for everything that's happened in my career so far, to be able to be here with the New York Knicks.'
Dalen Terry, a guard in his fourth season in the league, is averaging 3.5 points per game, shooting 44.1 percent from the field and 41.3 percent from three-point range. Terry will become a free agent after the season, making Yabusele's contract for the following year an expiring deal. This trade allows the Knicks to shed Yabusele's contract and acquire a player with a shorter-term commitment.
