NordseeMilch's Sustainable Switch: From Plastic Cups to Cartons (2025)

A bold move towards sustainability has been made by NordseeMilch e.G., a dairy cooperative with a rich history spanning over a century. In a groundbreaking decision, they've ditched plastic cups for Pure-Pak® cartons, a move that's sure to turn heads and spark debate.

But here's where it gets controversial... NordseeMilch's decision to embrace cartons is more than just a packaging change; it's a strategic shift towards sustainability and consumer satisfaction. This move follows their recent investment in an Elopak Shikoku filling machine, marking a significant step in their journey towards eco-friendly practices.

The cooperative's latest initiative builds upon the successful relaunch of their Schlemmersahne cream, now conveniently packaged in 500ml cartons. This move extends to their fresh whipping creams, which have made the transition from plastic cups to 200ml cartons, and even their fresh cocoa drink 'Watt'n Kakao', produced with animal welfare in mind, is now carton-packaged.

And this is the part most people miss: the consumer's perspective. A 2024 study by Kantar revealed that Pure-Pak® cartons were a hit with fresh cream consumers, showing a notable increase in purchase willingness compared to traditional cup packaging. Shoppers praised the cartons for their ease of use and innovative opening system.

With sustainability as their guiding principle, NordseeMilch opted for cartons without screw caps, prioritizing an easy opening feature. To ensure a smooth transition, the cartons feature a simple three-step guide and a QR code linking to a demo video, making the new opening system a breeze to master.

Volker Lohse, head of sales and food retail at NordseeMilch, explains, "The cartons without screw caps reduce plastic usage significantly compared to plastic cups. This aligns perfectly with German consumers' demand for renewable and recyclable packaging. For our retail partners, improved logistics and enhanced brand presentation in stores are key advantages in a competitive market."

NordseeMilch's story is one of innovation and growth. Founded as 'Meierei-Genossenschaft' 131 years ago, the cooperative has expanded its product line and become a leading private label supplier in Germany's fresh milk sector. Today, they produce dairy products for customers across Germany, maintaining a strong partnership with Elopak for over two decades.

This bold step towards sustainability showcases NordseeMilch's commitment to environmental responsibility and consumer satisfaction. It's a move that invites discussion and highlights the potential for positive change in the dairy industry. What are your thoughts on this packaging revolution? Do you think more companies should follow suit? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments!
