Barkley, a self-proclaimed fan of running backs, especially the top-tier ones, admits to being intrigued by the 49ers' offensive strategies. When asked if he'll be keeping an eye on McCaffrey's moves, he responds with a laugh, "I'd be lying if I said no, especially for a player like Christian."
Since 2018, Derrick Henry has led the running backs in scrimmage yards, with McCaffrey and Barkley hot on his trail. McCaffrey's impressive 2,126 scrimmage yards this year were a close second to Barkley's 1,413. But let's not forget, Barkley had an incredible 2,000-yard rushing season last year and even won the Super Bowl!
"Christian and I are always competitive, no matter the activity," Barkley shares. He recalls a fun anecdote from a commercial shoot, where they ended up playing chess against each other, with Barkley emerging victorious. "It's always friendly at first, but then we're back to competing!"
But here's where it gets controversial... Barkley reveals he was hoping for McCaffrey to achieve a remarkable feat: becoming the first back with two seasons of 1,000 yards rushing and receiving. Unfortunately, McCaffrey fell just 76 receiving yards short. "Him, Marshall Faulk, and Roger Craig are the only ones to do it once, and he could have been the first to do it twice."
Barkley's admiration for running backs is evident as he mentions other greats like Bijon Robinson, Jonathan Taylor, and Bucky Irving. "I'm a big fan of all of them," he says. But his special connection with McCaffrey, drafted just a year before Barkley, is undeniable.
Among active players with at least three playoff games, Barkley boasts the highest average scrimmage yards per game at an impressive 127.8. Henry follows closely at 121.4, and McCaffrey at 119.8. These stats speak volumes about their talent and consistency.
"Christian is an exceptional back," Barkley acknowledges. "I've studied all of them, and he's one of the best ever. He's an all-purpose back, an absolute beast on the field. He can run, catch, do it all. I'd say he's up there with Marshall Faulk, and he's getting even better."
And this is the part most people miss... Barkley and McCaffrey's friendly rivalry extends beyond the field. "We're good friends, so there's a little extra spice when we go against each other. I can't wait to see what he brings this week."
But Barkley is quick to add, "I can't stop him, and he can't stop me. But you always want to win, especially against a player of his caliber."
Winning the Super Bowl last year has only fueled Barkley's fire. "Once you taste victory, you want it again. You become even more focused, determined to replicate that feeling."
