Banker, Broker, Nightclub Owner: The Alleged Fraudster Who Outsmarted Two of Australia's Biggest Banks
In a shocking revelation, the financial world has been shaken by the alleged fraudster Andrew W Hu, a former relationship manager at Commonwealth Bank and a licensed mortgage broker. Hu, along with his associates Bing "Michael" Li and Zhouyao "Yumi" Chen, has been accused of orchestrating a sophisticated fraud scheme that targeted two major Australian banks, Commonwealth Bank and National Australia Bank (NAB).
The story begins in October 2021 when Hu, while working at Commonwealth Bank, started receiving business loan referrals from Li. Instead of following the official channels, Li sent the loan application documents directly to Hu via email and WhatsApp. Hu, in turn, allegedly forwarded these applications to his colleagues, seeking loans for companies controlled by Li and Chen. Over nine months, at least 38 loan applications worth $14.9 million were approved, according to court documents.
Commonwealth Bank's suspicions were raised in mid-2022, leading to an investigation. Hu was dismissed in August of that year after the bank identified suspicious loan applications linked to him. By then, the damage was significant, with the bank's security compromised and a loss of almost $15 million. Hu's knowledge of the bank's systems and loan processes had given him an unfair advantage.
The investigation revealed that Hu, Li, and Chen were the masterminds behind the Penthouse Syndicate, a group believed to be one of the largest fraud and money-laundering syndicates in Australia's history. The syndicate's origins can be traced back to 2019 when Hu and Li became associates. During his time at Commonwealth Bank and as a financial planner at NAB from 2015 to 2018, Hu allegedly gained insider knowledge, making him a key figure in the syndicate's operations.
In a recent development, financial crimes squad detectives charged Hu with facilitating $105 million worth of mortgage and business loan fraud for the syndicate. The syndicate has allegedly amassed a luxury property empire across Sydney with the help of a network of corrupt bankers, mortgage brokers, solicitors, and real estate agents. Hu, a licensed mortgage broker until shortly before his arrest, was charged with 89 offenses related to Commonwealth Bank business loans and $90 million worth of fraudulent NAB mortgage and business loans.
The investigation uncovered Hu's alleged involvement in directing other mortgage brokers to submit home loan applications with NAB, using cash payments to avoid detection. Hu's lavish lifestyle, including the purchase of a $1.5 million townhouse and the opening of a nightclub, further raised suspicions. The syndicate's scheme involved non-existent luxury cars, leading to the establishment of Strike Force Myddleton in January 2024, which successfully dismantled the syndicate's operations.
Hu's access to large amounts of unaccounted money, fraudulent documentation, and ties to China have raised concerns about his potential flight risk. His mother and stepfather were arrested and charged with dealing with the proceeds of crime. The case has brought increased scrutiny to the banking sector and sparked discussions about industry reforms following the royal commission into the conduct of finance giants.
