The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) is grappling with a significant crisis, as a substantial majority of its staff have expressed no confidence in Vice-Chancellor Andrew Parfitt. This unprecedented situation has unfolded amidst a backdrop of contentious job cuts and a lack of transparency, leaving staff feeling disempowered and concerned about the university's future. The National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) facilitated a vote, with 1,465 staff members out of 1,549 participants expressing no confidence in Dr. Parfitt, while only 84 showed their support. The scale of this vote is remarkable, as it marks the first time in UTS's 35-year history that a confidence vote has been held for a vice-chancellor. The NTEU's representative, Hossai Gul, emphasized the staff's prolonged wait for leadership to regain trust, which has instead been met with secrecy, fear, and harm. The proposed cuts have also led to stress management advice for distressed staff, including unusual recommendations like 'washing delicates'. The turmoil at UTS began with the hiring of consultants KPMG for $7 million to develop the Operational Sustainability Initiative, which suggested redundant staff and subject cuts. However, the university has since revised its proposal, indicating a shift towards voluntary redundancies and a reduced number of subject cuts. Despite these changes, staff anger persists, particularly regarding the vice-chancellor's contract extension, which was extended to seven years without staff notification. This lack of communication has further eroded trust. The Greens' deputy leader, Mehreen Faruqi, and NSW Labor MP Sarah Kaine have called for Dr. Parfitt's resignation, citing the overwhelming rejection by staff and the failure of governance arrangements. The university's response has been criticized for its lack of transparency and communication, with the NTEU suggesting that the university is prioritizing grandstanding over viable solutions.
